How to install a 3rd Generation Learning Nest room thermostat

I’ve created a video on explaining how to install a 3rd generation Nest room stat. Here I would like to explain my thoughts on it. My points can be a positive or a negative, depending on your situation. The Nest room stat requires a 240v plug or a 2 core wire going back to the wiring centre or the boiler if it’s a combination boiler.Nest 3rd Gen

Positive: Everyone has a socket in the house, the reliability of mains power rather then replaceable batteries. Option of using the old cable from pervious room stat. 3pin adaptor included in the package.

Negative: There may not be a socket in the position you want to place the Nest stat. You may have to hide the wire to the socket if using the adaptor.

With the 3rd generation Nest room thermostat you can now control your hot water. The ability to give a boost and adjust the schedule from the thermostat or on your mobile is a handy feature for the uk market with conventional systems. It also has a function which works with Auto-away and turns off the boiler.

A new Bigger and higher-resolution display may seem like an Apple upgrade gimmick but it still an upgrade. The bigger display has a far sight mode which lets you set the display to show the target temperature or a clock which can be seen from across the room. A thinner profile allows the Nest thermostat to be fitted more flush to the wall or you can place it on the stand which comes with the package.

The new OpenTherm support is a good feature if your boiler has it. It works by enabling a two-way communication instead of a on/off command from a thermostat. This helps the boiler determine the correct amount of gas to burn to reach the set temperature. A good energy saving feature to save money.

My 1st installation was to a S Plan system which had a wireless room thermostat. The customer was tired of replacing batteries every winter and wanted the option of controlling it from the phone. The installation is straightforward if you have basic wiring knowledge, but we would always advise you to call in a professional electrician or a Leicester gas safe engineer with the correct qualifications.

I’ve read mixed reviews about the thermostat, some have been excited with the device, some have been hugely disappointed. The concept is not new to the market and with anything which has wireless technology there will be hiccups on the way. With any product I believe to succeed you must have good customer support. I’ve never had to call Nest support, but from what I have read online I don’t think Nest will be winning any customer support awards any time soon. Overall for the price you pay you would expect more from it, but Nest have built up a reputable name being one of the market leaders in smart technology.

Replacing an Immersion Heater

Immersion heater element replacement in Leicester

Immersion heater element failure is a common fault on hot water cylinders. Lime scale and the element left on for long on a higher temperature are the main causes of failure. Select the correct type of element for your water hardness. Either use a Titanium model for hard aggressive Leicestershire water conditions, Incoloy for medium to hard water and copper for softer water conditions. Copper being the cheapest and Titanium being the most expensive. Furthermore when electricity is the only source for heating your water, an economical timer is necessary.

Also by having a cylinder thermostat to regulate the hot water temperature it will save money and prolong the life of the heating element.
Installation of a cylinder thermostat can estimate a saving of around £40 a year, which pays for it self. Installing a tank jacket and lagging the pipes will give addition savings.
A cylinder thermostat switches on and off the heat supply from the boiler/electricity to the hot-water cylinder. It works by sensing the temperature of the water inside the cylinder, switching on the water heating when the temperature falls below the thermostat setting, and switching it off once this set temperature has been reached. The recommended temperature of the cylinder stat should be between 60-65, which is high enough to kill harmful bacteria such as Legionella. Temperatures set above this range has a risk of scalding.

Replacing an immersion heater can be a simple job if you have the correct tools.

Tools required

Immersion spanner
PTFE / Joining compound
Hose Pipe

  • Isolate the power supply via the double pole spur switch, or the mains.
  • Turn off the water supply to the cylinder.
  •  Drain the cylinder by turning on the hot water taps, or the drain off cock located near the bottom of the cylinder.
  • Disconnect the electricity supply to the old immersion element. (Take a photo to recall if needed)
  • We would always recommend a qualified electrician for disconnecting and wiring of the element.

Time taken for draining of a cylinder will depend on the size of the tank. Most take 20-30min approximately, remember it is not necessary to fully drain the cylinder and you only need the water below the immersion.

  • Use the immersion spanner to undo the heating element, by applying heat can soften the compound which has become hard.
  • Install the new element ensuring to wrap PTFE tape around the thread to ensure a snug fit.
  • Reconnect the immersion to the electrical supply.
  • Re-fill the cylinder, checking thoroughly for leaks.

If no leaks are visible heat the water in the cylinder. Check periodically for leaks as the cylinder heats up.

Topic of the day is how not to fit a gas hob

One afternoon I was called out to do a gas safety certificate for a regular letting agent in Leicester. (No names mentioned for obvious reasons.) I was told the landlord had refurbished the property and was almost complete. Therefore I was required to inspect the property for the relevant documents. Now as an experienced gas engineer in Leicester, you know how the installation has been done from the minute you set your eyes on the pipe work. Alarm bells were ringing as soon as I saw the boiler installation. That was just the beginning of what was in store for me. After completing the relevant checks on the boiler and making a whole list of things to be done, I came across the gas hob. 

Starting with my visual inspection, I removed the oven to inspect the gas isolation valve to the hob. There it was, the most unbelievable gas connection I had come across. The builder (or cowboy) had used a flexible tap connector which is used for (as its called) connection a tap. Probably due to his lack of knowledge in soldering he connected a tap connector to the hob.

If this was overlooked, this could’ve turned out to be really dangerous. Even tho the tightness test had passed, it’s a must to carry out a visual inspection of visible pipework. The gas safe regulations state that hobs must be installed with rigid pipework. What was supposed to be a routine gas inspection turned out to be a 3 hour job.

The gas industry can not stress enough, how important it is to use Gas Safe engineers when it comes to dealing with gas work. Don’t put your family as risk, be gas wise, be Gas Safe.
